The contractor removed the pavement at Washington and Dewes Thursday and poured the concrete pavement yesterday. The concrete needs 72-hours to cure, so a test will be done on Monday morning to determine if the intersection can be reopened.

Washington-Dewes Intersection

The contractor is intending to replace the entire pavement in the intersection of Dewes and Washington Streets. The pavement will be removed and new high yield early strength concrete will be placed which requires a minimum cure duration of 72 hours before traffic can travel on the new pavement. The Village has coordinated this work with the summer school bus routes and the waste hauler to minimize the impact. The intersection will be barricaded and additional information signs will be posted one block away in each direction. The dates (weather dependent) selected for this work are August 4 (saw-cutting), August 5 (pavement removal) and August 6 (new pavement placement). The intersection will be reopened no later than August 10.

Strike Has Been Resolved

The strike was resolved last week and new contracts between the unions and contractors have been signed and are in effect.

Strike Continues

As of this morning, the strike continues. The Unions and the Contracting Companies are still in negotiations and have not yet reached an agreement. It is our understanding that the next scheduled meeting is set for Monday, July 19.

At this time, the Village has been notified that Chicagoland Construction Labor Unions are going on strike. The conflict is between the Contracting Companies and the Unions, not involving the Village.

Work has therefore been temporarily shut down on your street. We are insuring that all construction sites are safe to the general public and will continue to actively monitor each site.

As of today, we do not have any information on how long this strike could last. We will inform you when this issue is resolved and work will resume.

The contractor is pouring the concrete medians in the center of Lehigh today. These medians are meant to slow down traffic along southbound Lehigh as well as create an aesthetic enhancement near the downtown area. The medians will be landscaped.

The asphalt patching inside the new curb line along Lehigh was completed on Thursday. The new curb line allows for some landscaped medians in the center of Lehigh as well as a longer and straighter right turn lane onto Glenview Road from Southbound Lehigh. We are coordinating schedules with the library work, and the new medians down the center of Lehigh should be done in the next week or two. The intersection pavement of Dewes and Washington will also be replaced later this month and may require traffic to be re-routed for several days (more details to follow).

The contractor began concrete pavement on the new Prairie cul-de-sac today. Weather pending, they plan to complete it tomorrow. After the concrete has time to cure, the area will be landscaped and then Prairie will be complete!

Curb along Lehigh

The contractor had to leave out a few sections of curb along the west side of Lehigh due to the relocation of the light poles. Now that those poles have been relocated, the contractor can complete the curb line and pour a concrete base in between the road and our new curb

Prairie Cul-de-sac

The curb has been poured around the newly redesigned cul-de-sac. The contractor is currently prepping the roadway for asphalt pavement, which (weather permitting), could be scheduled for next week.

Curb along Lehigh

The new curb was installed along the west side of Lehigh today, from Spruce to Glenview. The light poles are being relocated, so the curb will be able to be completed soon.

Excavation of the new Prairie Cul-de-sac is ongoing. We should see the curb going in next week!

Punch List on Washington

The contractor was given a Punch List, which includes little items that need to be fixed since the work was completed. Residents may see workers on site starting next week making these necessary repairs.

Tentative Schedule

The contractors surveyor was on site yesterday to lay out the new curb line along Lehigh Ave. The changes to the curbline are happening on the west side of the road, starting near Spruce; the road will be widened to add space for the landscaped medians that are to be installed. Weather dependant, the contractor may begin saw-cutting the road as early as tomorrow, Thursday, May 13.

Prairie Ave is being turned into a cul-de-sac, with access from Washington Road. We anticipate this work starting in the next week or two.

All construction work is scheduled to be completed by July 2.

We met onsite with the contractor yesterday to discuss this year’s portion of the project. Work this year will include:

• Landscape islands on Lehigh (north of Glenview Road) to slow traffic and enhance safety,
• Lengthening the right turn lane on Southbound Lehigh at Glenview Road,
• Turning Prairie into a cul-de-sac, accessible from Washington Road, to both prevent cut-through traffic and add a green area between the new Library and Jackman Park.

The Contractor is coordinating with the Library construction; the work for this project should begin in mid-May.

The 2009 work on Washington and Glenview has completed the required traffic geometric changes in advance of the new traffic signal at this intersection. The new signal will be separately bid and constructed in 2010 with newly acquired State of Illinois funding. As an additional follow-up item, on-street parking on Washington Street will require some changes to be made upon review and recommendation by the Traffic Committee to the Village Board for final action.

Work on Lehigh and Prairie will be scheduled in early in 2010 upon coordination with the on-going Library construction work.

Washington Road Complete!

With the placement of surface asphalt on Washington and Glenview Roads last week, the reconstruction of Washington Road is complete minus a few small tasks. A small amount of concrete sidewalk remains, as well as landscaping, but that will all be done before winter is upon us. Check out the pictures below of the project after asphalt was completed.

Two small islands are going to be added to Lehigh next year. In order to make room for these, Lehigh needs to be widened a little bit at the north end (up towards Spruce). This work includes removing the existing curb and installing new curb with asphalt in the widened road area. This work will begin tomorrow. The remainder of the Lehigh reconstruction will take place next year, as well as turning Prairie, which is now a through street from Washington to Lehigh, into a cul-de-sac which will be accessible from Washington.

Curb & Gutter and Pavement Removal

The contractor has developed a revised pavement removal and replacement strategy which will proceed with the removal of all existing concrete curb on both sides of the street. This operation should be starting today. As the curb is removed, stone will be installed at driveway locations to provide access to each property. The contractor plans to place all new concrete curb (except for multiple user entrances like the park district, which will be split phased) on the entire street in one day. Concrete driveway aprons and concrete sidewalk may be installed the same day as the new curb. New concrete needs 72 hours to cure, so access over the new curb will not be available during that time. Residents will be asked to arrange for alternative parking locations during the access interruption. On street parking is available overnight, but not during the construction hours of 7 AM to 5:30 PM.

Pavement removal will follow after the new curb installation. This step will include the excavation of remaining existing pavement and subbase to the proposed subgrade level and installation of stone bedding including ramps to driveways starting from Dewes Street and proceeding north to the intersection at Lehigh. The pavement removal may also include pavement grinding which is noisy and generates dust.

Work on the new watermain, sanitary main and services and some storm services should be completed by next week. Road construction will begin late next week with the removal of the entire street down to the new subgrade. This will be done in sections to allow driveway access by the end of every day.

Utility work on Washington Street is continuing between Prairie and Lehigh. Road closures (allowing local traffic only) are necessary due to material deliveries and installation and will continue for a couple more weeks. Work on Washington between Prairie and Dewes will follow.

Contractor started water main construction on Washington Street on Tuesday 8/18/09, which will be installed in the southbound (western most) lane from Prairie Street to Lehigh Avenue. On street parking will not be permitted on Washington within the construction zone. For short periods of time during construction, property owners will not have access to their driveways or parts of the street, however driveway access will be available overnight. Water main construction is anticipated for the next several weeks.
